You have an 02, which is OBD2 and no 5.Os are. Now if you had a 90-94 the Martins kit runs ~5k, and then you need the engine, trans, driveshaft, exhaust, and assembly. Call it 20K. Mines for sale. David

If you really want a V8 on the 01 MX5, you might consider the chevy LS1 of from a camaro, trans am, or corvette. Its a very capable engine that goes a long way with minor bolt on parts... actually, they are insanely fast and pretty decent fuel economy. Though, seeing how might be a Ford person, it seems unlikely to happen, but throwing it out there. As far as price, yep around 15-20k sounds about right.
In the other hand for that price or even cheaper you can have a built turbo engine.

For the moment why not just do minor upgrades like suspension or brakes and just enjoy the car as is for the moment before committing yourself to a major project for the car?

Well it doesn't have to be a ford motor! But a camaro LS1 or a corvette motor you say? i will defiantly look into that! Thank you!
But yeah thats what i was going to do first just like my suspension and other things like maybe a body and some rims!

The LS1 is more advanced, and is much lighter I couldn't see why anyone would go with a 5.0 these days.

Different strokes... A Ford small block with aluminum heads is close to the weight of a LS. If you are going with a 95' or older car you can get a Ford motor for less $ than an LS as well. For all out power and updated design you can't beat the LS.

You could go an even cheaper route and pick up a chevy truck block and swap on some 241 or 243 heads along with an LS1/LS6 intake.  5.3L would still be bigger than the ford motor and make more power with the head swap.  They're a hell of a lot more common to find also.  You could get a 6.0L truck block for still cheaper than an LS1, but they're a bit harder to find, and a bit more pricy over the extremely common 5.3's.

The motor isnt the big cost factor, and for something as light as a miata I cant see a real reason to go much over a mild build.  The real money comes into play when you're having to fab up exhaust, wiring, rad, etc.  It will nickle and dime you to death.

I've never changed to aluminum heads , may someday though. You can buy it cheaper than build it.

It just makes the case to get a really good forced induction (turbo) and an audio tape of a V8! :29:
